ACADEMIC WRITING - Not-So-Iconic Figures PART 2

Last week I wrote about Max Factor, who was one of the first people to commercialise makeup, as well as the psychological effects behind makeup. I also wrote a little bit about Larry Tesler, who invented cut, copy and paste, as well as Tsao-I Shih and Martin Cooper. Today I would like to write a little more about Tesler and add another option, who I feel has really contributed to the development of visual and performance art in Indonesia, Marintan Sirait.

LARRY TESLER

Larry Tesler is a computer scientist who works in the field of human–computer interaction. Guess what? I just copied and pasted that last phrase from Wikipedia. Cut, copy and paste has greatly revolutionised how we communicate. It simplified the act of exchanging information. It saves time, reduces burden and promotes greater versatility. Larry Tesler, born April 24, 1945, wanted to make technology as user-friendly as possible. He implemented a method of capturing text into a computer’s internal memory, i.e. “cut”/”copy,” and then inserting it somewhere else, i.e. “pasting.” I just copied and pasted that last sentence from news.discovery.com, by the way. Thanks to Larry Tesler, I can safely say that my fingers won't turn plastic anytime soon.

Key phrases I may want to use: tired of keyboard acrobatics? ... Don't fret, just cut, copy and paste... (ideas pending)

MARINTAN SIRAIT

Marintan Sirait is the founder and curator of Jendela Ide, one of Indonesia's leading art communities. She established the non-profit organisation in 1995, along with Andar Manik. Jendela Ide aims to regenerate Indonesia's youth and cultural perspectives through workshops, exhibitions, performances, discussions, and social campaigns. As a mentor, she has also influenced me personally, and allowed me to develop my own artistic style. Jendela Ide's most recent project, Prung! involves quilting together 5,000 sheets of handprints as a sort of public vote against corruption. Sirait wants to drive away the negative connotation that comes with socio-political protests. Instead, she uses positive associations that promotes change instead of condemns problems. Jendela Ide has greatly influenced the growth of art and freedom of expression among Indonesian youths, which are key to improving our nation.
